Natural wood vs. steel playground equipment: an honest comparison

Somewhere in every playground project, someone falls in love with a photo — either a gleaming, brightly colored steel structure or a sculptural timber climber that looks like it grew out of the ground. Both can be excellent buys. But wood and steel age differently, cost differently, and suit different sites, and vendors on each side tend to oversell their material's strengths. First, the part that doesn't change: safety standards

Material choice does not change your compliance obligations. The case for steel

Steel post-and-platform systems dominate the commercial market for practical reasons. Galvanized, powder-coated steel shrugs off weather for decades — 20 to 30 years of service is a normal expectation, and manufacturer warranties on structural posts often run 15 years to lifetime. Maintenance is genuinely light: periodic hardware checks, occasional touch-up paint, and cleaning.

Steel is also modular. Components come from a catalog, which means faster lead times, easier future expansion, and straightforward replacement when one part wears out. Because the systems are mass-produced, you get more play events per dollar — a real advantage when the budget is tight. If your organization has limited maintenance staff — a small school, a church with volunteer facilities help, an HOA — steel's low upkeep is a serious argument. Expect a 15-to-25-year service life for quality robinia or laminated structures — respectable, but dependent on upkeep in a way steel simply isn't.
